Many of the fans would comment on her posts, sharing their own experiences of living with vitiligo and other similar challenges and she would acknowledge them.

Some of her fans even suggested some home remedies that help manage vitiligo which she very graciously accepted as well. What an optimistic view to deal with such life situations!

Het act of boldness and compassion will definitely help with mainstreaming and normalization of vitiligo.

Her Instagram simply booms with positivity and joy!

Mamta strongly believes in the power of correct and good words. She has always kept her posts positive and warm. While people often attribute vitiligo to changes in the skin in a negative manner, Mamta welcomes these ‘New Colors’ in her life. She calls the daily change of her skin the ‘adding of new colors to her life’.

Mohandas’s approach to her condition is the perfect example of an optimistic view. A simple change in perspective of looking at things can bring about a massive change in one’s life! Mohandas has never been antagonistic or upset about the onset of vitiligo and has in fact welcomed the condition.

Here’s how vitiligo impacts a person’s physical and psychological health

Vitiligo is an auto-immune condition that causes skin de-pigmentation resulting in the formation of white patches on one’s skin. While vitiligo can be managed with treatment, a permanent cure (complete reversal of the depigmentation) is not available yet. While vitiligo causes changes in the skin of a person, it is medically non-harmful to oneself and is neither contagious nor infectious.

Having said that, the psychological impact of vitiligo cannot be ignored. The social stigma and stereotypes that are experienced can lead to anxiety and depression. Person with vitiligo, anticipating people’s negative reactions, tend to isolate from others, hampering social life to a great extent.

Mamta Mohandas has refused to let her skin condition bring negativity to her life. She has always stood strong against negative comments and simply does not let them impact her self-confidence.

Mohandas is also a cancer survivor

Right when her career was peaking and she began gaining an appreciation for her work, Mamta was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2009. It is a form of cancer that attacks the lymph nodes of the body, damaging the immune system functioning.

Despite suffering from a relapse of cancer in 2013, Mamta has braved the treatment and fearlessly continues to fight it even today.

A strong advocate of Breast Cancer Awareness, Mamta’s doing it all right!

Not only has Mohandas been strongly vocal about her own health condition, but she also advocates for Breast Cancer awareness. Her posts have always created awareness about breast health and have encouraged women to go for regular screenings.

Not shutting down herself, but standing strong in the face of stereotypes and judgments!

The film and television industry often go by the conventional standard of beauty. The female actresses are expected to have flaw-less, smooth skin, as a socially accepted norm to be called as beautiful. Today, however, these typical standards have been challenged by numerous people in the industry who have let their talent and not their physical appearance do the talking.

If we talk about vitiligo, there are many models, actors and celebrities who have made their name by excelling in their career and even channeled their fame to bring about awareness about vitiligo and Mamta Mohandas is also just doing that!

Her bravery is admirable and her words have redefined the standards of beauty making them much more inclusive. It is so heartwarming to see actors and actresses shun the orthodox stereotypes and look at beauty from a different lens. Kudos to her for being a source of inspiration to so many like her!
